Review by Dstaufderson -- The Dark Web Murders
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a dark and twisted murder mystery. Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his team of investigators, travel into the deep depths of the dark web attempting to catch a menacing serial killer. The serial killer taunts the investigators through a series of blogs that recounts the horrific details of every murder. From intense debriefs, gruesome crime scenes, police lineups, and interrogations- this book has it all! Brian O’Hare’s writing style immerses the reader into the mystery, seeing it from all sides. What a thrilling ride it was to try to piece this puzzle together!
Based on the look of the cover, I anticipated it to be heavy on the computer side of things. It does not contain much computer verbiage or coding discussion which was a bit of a relief for me personally. The journey into the dark web is just a mere detail in this rich and scandalous plot. Brian O’Hare does an excellent job of explaining the computer related components mainly through the character’s dialogue.
The amount of characters in the book was both a blessing and a burden. Initially, it was a challenge to keep track of them all. Upon reading and diving deeper into the story line, sorting them out became easier. The author provides a character list at the beginning of the book which is a useful tool. There was a good balance of lovable, yet disturbing characters. Although the book revolves around the main character Jim Sheehan, he still relies on the talents of other law enforcement professionals which gave the book a very realistic feel.
This is number 4 in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series. Even without having read the preceding books, it was easy to jump into the fourth book without being totally lost. This story is fast-paced and is jam-packed with such interesting themes and concepts. It takes you on a philosophical journey and gives you goosebumps along the way. It was a chilling experience reading from both the view’s of the investigative team and the serial killer. That is why this book was so appealing, even with all the bread crumbs O’Hare left lying around it was difficult trying to guess who the perpetrator was.
At no point is this story boring. There are times as the reader, you may want to look away from the book but you will instantly be sucked back in, turning page after page hoping that justice gets served! This book deserves a solid 4 out of 4 rating from this reviewer!
