Review by Wuoketch -- The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings
Sophie, Rose, Veronica, Amanda and Melody are the superwomen that I have encountered in my life. Women who are ready to sacrifice their lives for what they love. Who would think a woman may be good at fishing and hunting than men? Meet the five extraordinary women in Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings.
Michelle Cummings describes every detail that fly fishing would involve. The literature review at the beginning of section one says, "the tools for a fly fisherman's tradition includes a rod and a reel".She introduces us to how Sophie and Rose met. Sophie loved watching Rose catching fish. Being interested in fly fishing, she decides to go for lessons to help her enhance her casting skills. She meets Buck who is shocked by Sophie's desire on learning how to fly fishing. Later the four ladies(Rose, Veronica, Amanda and Sophie) met Melody at the river bank. Melody had been working for an online platform where she could get paid for posting pictures almost half-naked, they then introduced her to fly fishing. The ladies would meet often and share most of their life stories including their love lives while fishing. Amanda later died which was a blow to the ladies.
Reel Sisters is a 429 paged book, divided into 10 sections with each page containing 250 words. At the beginning of every section, there are some interesting literature reviews which give the reader more knowledge about fly fishing. Some of the themes that Michelle uses in the book include friendship, love, betrayal, and death.
What I liked most about the book were the plot and characterization. Michelle Cummings' way of plot structure and character introduction was just amazing. Michelle's diction was simple, easy to understand and well arranged. The references that Michelle gave were good and would give the reader additional information. I also enjoyed the humor in the book especially when the girls were together. Michelle also uses vivid description as a form of writing, I could form images of every event while reading.
The dislikes were more personal, which I think could not affect other readers perspectives of the book, except for the few grammatical errors that I met. Therefore, I believe the book was not well edited.
I choose to rate Reel Sisters 3 out 4 stars, I deducted one star because of the few errors I met, I recommend the book to ambitious individuals and feminists. Unfortunately, this might not be the right book for people who view women as inferior, because this book is more centered on women.
