[Following is a volunteer review of "Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders" by Brian E. Forschner.]
Little Ada was excited because she was able to take part in a surprise party for her parents' birthday. She was proud because she had managed to keep it a secret this time. A wonderful evening full of fun turned into horror when Ada was found raped and strangled in the backyard. For the next nine years, a serial killer was on the loose.
Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders by Brian E. Forschner is a book that is based on real events. Ada Lantz, Dona Gilman, Anna Markowitz, Elizabeth Fulhart, and Mary Forschner, who was the author's great-aunt, were all raped and killed. Murders occurred in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1900s. This book is dedicated to girls as a memorial for them and the sufferings they went through.
I am sure that Forschner made an extensive research to write this book. There are six chapters in the book, and five of them represent each girl's story. Stories and girls are connected only by the way they were killed. I was amazed by so many details that Forschner gave us. Events in every chapter brought this book to life. Scenes are vividly described, detailed, and fascinating. I am sure that it took an eternity for the author to find all those documents, scripts, and evidence which he provided us in the book.
I enjoyed reading this book since the writing was simple and readable. There are a few original photos of people, houses, streets, and buildings from the book. Forschner also gave us dates and days in every chapter that made tracking the timeline of each story easy. I haven't found any errors in the book, and I can say that this book is edited professionally.
I am giving this book solid 4 out of 4 stars for its uniqueness, simplicity, and information. I am not a fan of history-themed books, but I am glad that I chose this one. I have learned so much from it, and I think that everyone should read it. I am sure that just a few people know that those girls and their stories existed.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves crime, a piece of history, and anticipation in the book. Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders is not suitable for young readers, it is also not a great choice for those who cannot bear graphic scenes of girls being raped, beaten, and murdered. There is also a bit of profanity, but it doesn't affect the overall picture of the book.
