A tale a of woman being stalked by an uber possessive alpha male is scary stuff. While a tale of a woman being stalked by an uber possessive alpha male android can be good fun. Inge-Lise Goss gives us the latter in her new novel, No Reprieve. This is the second book in the No Freedom series. I was able to enjoy this book, even though I have not read the first book in this series.

Intelligent androids were created to serve man. Many are indistinguishable from real humans. The androids who are smarter and stronger than humans are beginning to take over the planet. Many humans do not realize the androids are wresting control from them. However, an organized group of rebels are resisting.

Paislee, is a beautiful young woman on the run from Pellegrin. Pellegrin is Paislee’s ex-android lover who is hellbent on getting her back. He is also the leader of all the androids on the west coast. He wields considerable power and has many resources at his disposal. To evade Pellegrin, Paislee joins up with the rebels. She is eventually captured by Pellegrin. However, she must act like she is falling back in love with him, so she can steal information and give it to the rebels.

The characters in this book all have fun and quirky personalities. This adds camp humor to a serious plot. For instance, Paislee often needs a few drinks before going on a mission for the rebels. This leads to her being so conspicuous, it is amazing that she does not get caught. As well, despite her hatred for Pellegrin, she cannot stop marveling at how good he is in bed. It is this type of deadpan writing style that makes this book a real page turner.

My one problem with this story is the inconsistency of Pellegrin’s character. At one moment he is literally tearing a human to pieces. At the next moment he hides in a closet when someone invades his home. As well, he is portrayed as incredibly smart, but acts unbelievably obtuse at times. This is especially true during interactions with Paislee when it is obvious she is lying to him.

I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was easy and fun to read. The characters were enjoyable as well. It was very well edited. I noticed no grammar or spelling errors. If you are a science fiction fan and you are looking for a light read, then this is the book for you. I look forward to reading the first book in this series, as well as the future ones.

I also have not read the first book in this series. I did not learn that this was not the first book until after I had finished reading the novel. After reading certain scenes, I was confused as to what happened between Paislee and Pellegrin that made her want to leave him. I was hoping there would be flashbacks to learn how they met and what made her fall in love with a robot. However, there were not any because that is most likely explained in the first book. I read your thoughts on Pellegrin. Pellegrin is obviously an android, so he is programmed to act certain ways. I am pretty sure in the scene where he hides in the closet, he is playing Paislee. He was obviously testing her to see if she would protect him. Remember, her uncle Edward told her to protect Pellegrin, so Paislee saw an opportunity to protect him and obeyed a direct order. I have to disagree with your statement about there not being any errors. There were several errors, which made me rate the book a score of 3 out of 4 stars because there were so many that were distracting. I was really impressed with Paislee's character, and thought that she was based off of a real person. Your review was very insightful and I respect your opinions. What was a scene in the story that was shocking for you?
