[Following is a volunteer review of "Winners and Losers in words and cartoons" by Arthur Hartz.]
Some people believe it is either you are a winner or a loser. Several materials teach people on how to be a winner, but the big question is, how do you define a winner or a loser? Does it count?
Winners and Losers: In Words and Cartoons is a short graphic novel written by Arthur Hartz, a medical researcher, and a social anthropologist. In this book, Arthur Hartz explains the underlying meaning of success using aphorisms and cartoons. The book contains 73 pages. More than half of the pages describe the aphorisms for success with cartoon illustrations and words. Famous George Eliot’s statements were referenced and summarized to a simple term. Also, topics like mediocrity, aristocracy (people whose progress is based on parental lineage), and meritocracy (people whose progress is based on ability and talent) were examined. In the remaining pages, the author concludes his observations by giving the reader a broader view of what counts in life.
The book is very informative and thought-provoking. Every information in this book has its meaning, starting from the written words to the least illustration of a book cover in one of the pages. Also, I found myself nodding along, agreeing with the book as I read some of the author’s statements. Whereas other aphorisms like, “Why are famous people profound (seen as showing great knowledge) when they say something obvious,” left me with a more precise thought.
I enjoyed the cartoon sections as some of them were hilarious, especially the illustration that describes the author’s statement on Page 33. Most of the pictures are self-explanatory, whereas few require critical thinking to understand the author’s message. The drawings are basic and straightforward. My favourite cartoon caption is one that describes the gift of being oblivious.
Though this graphic novel is a short one, it requires careful observations and the reader’s total attention to be able to relate to the author’s explanations. The book would appeal to people who desire more happiness and personal improvements. Moreover, there is something for everyone; a statement of facts to give you hope and a word to make you think.
Overall, there is nothing I dislike about the book. It is well-edited because I did not notice any grammatical or punctuation errors. One of the things I admire in any inspirational books, irrespective of the number of pages, is the depth of knowledge displayed in it. In this department, this book excels. Therefore, I am rating Winners and Losers: In Words and Cartoons 4 out of 4 stars.
