[Following is a volunteer review of "Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat" by R.F. Kristi.]
Serendipity Mystery, by R.F. Kristi, is a children's book that follows Inca, Fromage, Cara, Charlotte, and Mom on their vacation to Sri Lanka. Serendipity Mystery is the seventh book in the Diary of a Snoopy Cat series. It's all fun and games until a sword and gold coins are stolen from a museum. Curiosity always gets the better of Inca as displayed in previous books in the series, and this time, Inca and her friends engage in finding out the guilty party in the theft of the sword and gold coins. Will Inca and her friends succeed? What effect will participating in solving this mystery have on their vacation plans?
The entire book is narrated from Inca's perspective, and a simple and clear language is employed. A few eye-catching and colorful illustrations of animals, like cats, sea turtles, elephants, dogs, and monkeys, are also included in the book. These features will make the book more appealing to children and hold their attention while they read. The illustrations will also educate children on different animals they may not have encountered yet.
Children will find Inca's fun and outgoing personality easy to connect to, and they will learn from the level of determination she put into achieving what she wants. I liked that the book attempts to share a bit of the rich culture of Sri Lanka as we follow the characters on vacation. However, I would have liked the author to give us more of a Sri Lanka tour, as it was the only part of the book where I would have loved an improvement.
Furthermore, Serendipity Mystery is exceptionally well-edited. There were no typographical or grammatical errors throughout the book. This will ensure that reading the text flows as smoothly as possible as readers delve into the captivating mystery that Inca and her friends attempt to solve.
Overall, Serendipity Mystery is a great children's book. There is also an underlying theme of showing generosity to people you meet. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I discussed a complaint above, but it wasn't enough to prevent me from giving the maximum rating. I would recommend this book to children between the ages of 5 and 10.
