[Following is a volunteer review of "Guardian of Deceit" by William H. Coles.]
Guardians of Deceit by William H. Coles has surprisingly turned out to be an excellent book. I say surprising because the synopsis left me wondering if I would really like it. The story opens with seventeen-year-old Darwin, the main character, boarding a plane to go live with his cousin, who just happens to be a professional football player. One the plane traveling from Pittsburgh to New York, he is seated between a cantankerous elderly woman and a physician. He never sees the cantankerous woman again, but the physician ends up being a driving force in Darwin’s life. Upon arriving at his cousin’s house in New York, the life he envisioned with him is clearly not how things will go. Treated as a servant, he is expected to earn his keep by working for the estate. All of this went together with the windowless storage room he was given as his bedroom.
The book continues with a cornucopia of characters, all who help shape Darwin’s life in one way or another. From a famous singer to two spoiled daughters of wealth, and from backroom poker games to upscale art shows, this book explores all areas of New York and what they have to offer. Murder investigations, adultery, ethical medical practices, and entrepreneurial wealth are just some of the themes you will experience while reading this story.
I found myself completely immersed in this story and its characters. I found all the characters likable in their own ways, so much to the point that I found myself rooting for those that maybe didn’t deserve the attention. Is it appropriate to admire one who considers adultery? Or should your attention lie with the one who is honest with their intentions?
What I liked most about this book was Darwin’s drive to achieve his dream of becoming a doctor, even though he seemed to become jaded along the way. What I liked least about this book was that I felt that there were some unresolved issues. The only thing that would explain the unresolved issues is if there is a sequel to this book.
I would give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was clearly professionally edited. I would recommend this book to mature audiences only, as there is language, sexual content, and violence. I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future. Definitely a page-turner that kept me up late into the night!
