A mesmerizing story of self-discovery and family ties. Tom Olsen never expected to have a granddaughter, let alone one with as much attitude as Sarah Cooley. The child of a daughter Tom barely knew, Sarah will test his limits, as well as her own, during a daring hike through the wilderness of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Equipped with their packs and Tom’s close friends, they begin their trek across a land of “magic, history, and legend.” The group gets more magic than they bargained for when Sarah vanishes from the trail, only to return to them 8 days later full of stories from a time long past and an inexplicably deep connection to the land.

Charlie Sheldon’s Strong Heart is not a story for the casual fiction reader. Its straightforward telling and dry dialogue, although refreshing to the seasoned reader, may prove to be rather bland for the reader in search of an emotional roller coaster. This story is purpose driven, its appeal comes from the fact that the author knows exactly where he wants to go and how he wants to tell it. It is a story that is able to entertain readers simply because it is being told.

What I liked most about this book was the simple and natural way the story unfolded. There were no complex side stories or character relationships to piece together. All of the story’s components were laid out plain and simple to be felt and enjoyed by the reader. I found soothing to be an appropriate word during my reading. My mind could relax and my imagination could wander as I followed Sarah’s story.

There was nothing that I particularly disliked about the book. It was not like other books that line my shelves, but that is in no way a negative against the story. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of most contemporary novels. The editing was especially well done. I did not find a single spelling or grammatical error.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The straightforward story and characters were thoroughly enjoyable and the editing was superb. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a simple story or are in need of a break from contemporary novels but do not necessarily want to stop reading. An overall quick read with a satisfying end that readers can enjoy at their own pace.
