Review by Stevin Onward -- The Spirit of Want
This book, The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles, is about a lady called Lucy MacMiel who is a lawyer. She seems to be lost in the world and nothing goes right for her. Her family rejects and abandons her because she does not have the same skin color, and also because of how she treated her own child and husband. They choose not to forgive her. Lucy MacMiel and Luke Osborne fall in love and give birth to a girl called Jennifer. Lucy never cares about her because she does not have the motherly nature and she wasn’t psychologically prepared for a baby. The child is left under the custody of her father Luke and her auntie Elizabeth after her mother travels abroad. Luke later falls in love with Elizabeth and marries her after divorcing Lucy. The young girl later succumbs to Leukemia.
I liked how the author, William H. Coles, has employed a lot of fiction in the book making the reading enjoyable. The story is in connection from beginning to end. Each character plays their role well hence making the stories complete. I liked how Elizabeth loved her half-sister despite both of their parents hating her. She even proceeds with the kidney donation although that does not happen because she is pregnant for Luke. I also liked the fact that Jennifer hasn’t lost the love of her mother even after being abandoned during her delicate stage of growth.
I did not like how Lucy’s parents treat her as if she was a lesser being just because of her race. That, according to my perception, is the main cause of Lucy’s behavior because she did not get the parents love from the word go. She results in being violent and harsh with herself. This is why she throws herself into the arms of any available man, just to get the love, care and attention that she did not receive from her family members. Lucy finally dies a miserable death. I also did not Like Lucy’s father’s character of manipulating everyone just because he has money and power. His greed for prestige makes some innocent people such as Sandra Perez jobless just because they know every detail of the offence he has committed in the department and they might spill the beans. Whoever tries to go against him is dismissed and that to me is a very bad trait.
I prefer the audience of this book to be elderly people because it contains a lot of romance scenes which are toxic to the young generation. The scenes are portrayed by Lucy MacMiel who engages herself with more than one man intimately. These men include Luke, Fenly and Hower Bain. However, it is strongly evidenced by the relationship between Reverend Hower Bain and Lucy MacMiel.
I rate this book, The Spirit of Want, as 4 out of 4 stars because it was professionally edited. I did not locate any typos while reading the exciting book. In addition to that, the fiction employed by the author captures the reader’s attention to the brim. I enjoyed reading the book and other people should enjoy reading it too.
