In this simple to read historical fiction, Mixed Blessings, by J. M Muse, the author tackles and paints the pictures of racism, discrimination and colour influence using America as a case study. The author addresses this with a narrative centered around a premise without the historical support of civil right activists like Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X.

The central plot of the novel revolves around racial discrimination, skin colour preference and the targeted plot to reverse this through the leadership of Kublai Khan who is the main character of the novel. His plan involves the arrangement of a union between males and females belonging to Asian minorities and Blacks. This union is expected to produce a different race by itself. Though he obtains assistance from the minorities leaders, he was constantly opposed by Pastor Dalton whose church composed of whites. Minister Kublai Khan's attempt to enforce his plots and the hatred of Pastor Dalton sharpens the plot of the novel.

The book contained 321 pages with fourty_five chapters. The story is narrated from the third person perspective in a conversational, humorous and metaphorical tone. Each chapter presented explores the numerous forms of racial discrimination and abuse faced by the characters due to their skin colour .it also presents the determined attempt of Minister Kublai Khan to enforce his plots and the unwavering efforts of Pastor Dalton to thwart it.

The author employed the concepts of introducing new characters, places and events with relation to the central theme of the book. There is a lot going on, there are many characters and it moves quickly between scenes. Though there were many characters in the book, the author made a clear-cut distinction between them and the characters presented were well developed. The characters were presented in a way which shows the roles of skin colour towards the attainment of one's goals.

The cornerstone of an excellent historical fiction is research and it is evident that the author spent quality time researching his subject matter. He went painstaking depths to make every element in his work as real as possible without decorating it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and have no doubt giving it a rating of 4 out of 4 Stars. The quality and complexity of the book along with how much I enjoyed the book swayed me from giving it a lower score. This rating is influenced by the overall execution of the book, the well-researched nature of the book, and the author's ability to pass his points across in an orderly and concise manner.

I recommend it to everyone who is interested in learning more about racism in the American context and to everyone that has soft side for historical fiction. The book was professionally edited, there were no exhaustive spelling errors.
