[Following is a volunteer review of "The Date Farm" by Jack Winnick.]
Date Farm by Jack Winnick brings us back into the fascinating world of Lara and Uri. The now married agents return to USA to visit Lara’s family. What starts out as an idyllic vacation at Lara’s family farm in Ohio is disrupted by a terror attack at a mall in Los Angeles that kills hundreds. The situation then quickly turns into a series of events that include betrayal, robbery and kidnapping.
Lara, an accomplished FBI agent, and her husband Uri, a skilled Mossad field agent, cut their vacation short to land in New York City where terrorists are apparently hatching a plan to steal gold reserves from one of the world’s largest banks. Add to that a complete communications system failure and the threat goes up exponentially. Chasing these enemies takes the pair from New York to Nova Scotia and all the way to Tehran. Here Lara and Uri truly reveal their talent as they go undercover on the “Date Farm” which is the electronic headquarters of the terrorist group.
The author seamlessly merges the places and events as he takes the reader across the world to capture America’s enemies and retrieve the stolen goods. As always he gives pertinent background information on the culture and traditions of the country that he refers to. In this book we gather meaningful insight on the history of Iran and how it perceives USA as a threat. In doing so the author weaves history with fiction effortlessly.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 as it is truly exciting and keeps the reader wanting more at each turn of the page. The author skillfully maintains the suspense and keeps the reader engrossed to the very end.
Lara and Uri make a dynamic couple and provide a welcome change from traditional spies and agents. The way they communicate with each other not only as agents but also relate to each other as husband and wife is especially heart-warming. Both are well trained operatives but also human, and that adds to their intrigue.
Although this is the 4th book in the series, it is a perfect stand-alone read and does not require the reader to have prior knowledge of the characters. The author develops each character fully and also explains characteristics of ethnic populations as pertinent to the story. That is the main reason the book does not deserve anything lower than 4. In fact the prior narrative only encourages the reader to get the other books and read them too. This book is sure to please any reader and definitely lovers of international thrillers
