So, You’re Raising Your Grandkids! By Harriet Hodgson is a non-fiction guide for grandparents who find themselves in the role of parenting their grandkids. The author successfully raised her own twin grandchildren, so she has a wealth of personal experience to share. However, the author shares more than her personal experiences. She also includes professional advice and tips from well-known and credible sources, such as Psychology Today, and Mayo Clinic.

The life stories and advice are shared in a friendly, storytelling style, which is what I liked most about this book. The conversational style makes a difficult subject enjoyable to read about, and the stories about the author’s own family experiences engage the reader’s interest. The book is very well written, and the editing is top notch. I did not find any grammar or spelling mistakes. However, in Chapter 5, the author advises against using attack words, but there is no list of attack words given. I feel a detailed description of attack words would be helpful to the reader, so neglecting that description is what I liked least about this book.

This book would be best for grandparents who are contemplating raising their grandkids, or those who are already raising their grandkids. There is no profanity or vulgarity, so it may even be helpful to older grandchildren who have made the transition to being cared for by grandparents. It contains a wealth of wisdom and information for anyone in this position. The book covers many situations that will arise, such as grief, self-care, communication, discipline, scheduling, and how to find signs of progress in what can seem like a very long road.

Another thing I liked about this book is that each chapter ends with a summary of key points that were covered, which is very helpful. These summaries are titled, What Works. That is a very positive title, and it goes along with the positive attitude of the book. Raising grandkids is hard, and it often occurs due to negative circumstances, but one message of this book is that there are always positives to be found. The author gives her readers a way to track those positives by using a daily Happiness Jar. She also gives concrete ways to track positive progress, such as body language, the absence of nightmares, word choices, and the general atmosphere of the home.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It earns a high rating for two reasons: number one, I really had to search to find something I did not like about the book, and number two, it is a very positive book. I am a positive person, so positivity resonates with me. The book even ends on a positive note. In the final chapter, Time to Celebrate, the author says that grandparents are a power to be reckoned with, and they are growing stronger all the time. Anyone who reads this book will be uplifted by its joyous, yet serious and realistic, tone.
