[Following is a volunteer review of "The Bell Maker" by Chris Bowen.]
Chris Bowen’s book The Bell Maker intrigues the reader until the very end. The story starts with a mere bell that belongs to the author’s grandfather. Going through the author’s story, one realizes the importance of the tiny bell to the grandfather. The grandfather does pass away, and it seems the bell goes with the grandfather. After his grandfather’s death, the author receives a letter in which his grandfather has given him some sort of instruction. At first, the author doesn’t listen, but his everyday life seems to end up revolving around the letter. He decides that he will go on this journey to fulfill his grandfathers’ wish.
The theme that is expressed throughout this book seems to relate to family values. The entire time I could sense the anxiety the author was feeling as he told the story he had been hiding for so long. As he goes through his journey, one can clearly see a stronger connection built between him and his grandfather. He also understands little things about his grandfather that he might not have seen had he refused to go on this journey. This book can teach one to look and understand the little things in life.
I liked the mystery factor in the book the most because it really intrigues the reader into wanting to finish the story. The story starts off by just talking about the bell, making it seem very light-hearted. It is then associated with the grandfather's passing and the whole adventure in store for the author. The author also learns life lessons that can be valued by the reader, such as the importance of silence in life.
I disliked the lack of background information the most. There were barely any details on any of the family members, the grandfather’s past, the author’s upbringing, and the previous connection that would lead the author to go on his journey. Although, this was made up for by the intriguing storyline and ability to make the book appear like a mystery novel or thriller.
I would give this book a 4 out of 4-star rating. This book did have a few typos, but it did not take away from the story. I could not put the book down once I started reading it, because there was a mystery at every corner. I would suggest this book to someone that is mildly spiritual but also enjoys a book about an adventure and mystery.
