[Following is a volunteer review of "Winners and Losers in words and cartoons" by Arthur Hartz.]
Are you a fan of reading satirical magazines on various ideologies? Do you find amusement in the caricatures making a few cutting comments on everyday occurrences? Then you will surely find Winners and Losers in words and cartoons by Arthur Hartz right up your alley.
Satire, parody, irony, and exaggeration have been the robust weapons employed in the literary and ideological wars. Many writers have entertained the readers through their upbeat and sometimes scornful satirical works. Through this book, the author has successfully created a light-hearted mockery to generate debate and conversation on 'What the winners and losers think about each other.'
The book contains nine chapters revolving around winning and losing. Not everyone knows the mechanics of making money. But all are aware of how money influences the dynamics of status in our society. It's a natural human tendency of craving for a higher standing in one's social circle and profession. Does it mean one is only a winner when he or she becomes the talk of workplace discussion and gossip grapevine?
What I loved about this book is that the author has masterfully broached certain taboo subjects using aphorisms and cartoons to lighten up the atmosphere in tough times. The book has displayed how people are so after clinching the number one place and take enormous pride in their accomplishments. It has shown that without losers, winners cannot exult their glorifying successes. And even the losers have developed a coping mechanism to deal with their current state of affairs.
There is one instance of delayed gratification tested through the famous marshmallow experiment. Then there is another one depicting the irrationality of favoritism for the intelligent students among professors. Even the cover of the book has shown how good things and sympathy come to those who look good.
The various comical visuals genuinely gave a nice spin to the book. I loved the drawing of Dietrich Bonschlemielhoeffer. Adding the same depth, shadows, and details like in this one to other illustrations can make the book even more delightful to read.
The book seemed well-edited as I failed to find any significant errors. It didn't contain the use of any profane language. However, a few of the cartoons were showing some degree of obscenity. There was nothing to dislike about this work as the author has done an excellent job of bringing out the stark reality behind the mindsets of winners and losers. So, I am happily awarding it with 4 out of 4 stars. This book is well-suited for all who have an interest in reading such satirical works that aim to poke fun at society and politics. If you love reading comics, then also you can grab this book for amusement.
