[Following is a volunteer review of "The Dark Web Murders" by Brian O'Hare.]
A series of 4 murders . . . all seemingly unrelated . . . a killer on the hunt for justice. (i)The Dark Web Murders(/i)is a new spine-tingling novel from Brian O’Hare that puts you on the edge of your seat. Brian O’Hare showcases Chief Inspector Sheehan and his team working frantically to solve this mysterious case of 4 subsequent murders each of the victims disposed of in the same way. With little clues to work with, they must try to save the killers last victim before time runs out. The elusive killer delves into the Deep Web, a dark and dangerous place where corrupt people visit to live vicariously through others. Here they blog about their quest for justice detailing each murder as they commit them. But this isn’t the only mystery! What is ‘The Club’? Who is ‘The Club’? Will Inspector Sheehan ever get to the bottom of this mystery?
Initially, I was a bit sceptical about this book. I do not mind a mystery novel but tend not to choose them as my first line. However, I am glad I picked this one up. It reminded me of an episode of Criminal Minds as you were kept in suspense throughout the entire book. Very cleverly written (i)The Dark Web Murders(/i) dropped small clues pointing towards the killer which did not come together until the end. The storyline unveiled a small part with new clues towards the killer’s identity but often the trails lead nowhere, for the team to be back to square one again.
The characters were well developed and engaging. Although, Chief Inspector Sheehan and his partner Detective Stewart were the main protagonists of the story, each of the supporting detectives within the Serious Crimes team was well developed and interesting in their own way. Their interactions with each other felt authentic and added a little sense of humour to the book which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was engaged from beginning to end and struggled to put this book down!
This is the fourth book in the series by O’Hare. I have not read any of the previous books in the series but did not feel like I was missing out on anything. It made me want to go back and read the others. One thing I found very helpful was the list of characters at the beginning of the book along with acronyms used by the police in Northern Ireland. These were both useful when reading the book but not entirely necessary once you had gotten into the flow of the book. It was exceptionally well-edited, and I did not notice any grammatical mistakes.
I would rate this book a (b)4 out of 4 stars(/b). The storyline from the beginning is engaging and never slowed down always working towards finding the identity of the killer. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery or any kind of Criminal Minds or CSI tv shows. The tone of the book is set at the beginning and never lapses with heavier topics covered and sometimes a philosophical view adopted. If you are waiting for your next mystery book this is the one for you.
