Review by MysKimba -- How To Be Successful
How to Be Successful, by Curtis McCoy, is a non-fiction, self-improvement book. Curtis is man who is not only successful in business, but is a survivor of a brain tumor as well. The author recounts many pivotal moments in his life, including living with diabetes, overcoming cancer, and building and running a business with his family. The lessons he has learned in life contribute to the lessons on success he attempts to impart on the reader. The author not only talks about his life history, he also interviews himself and individuals who have made great accomplishments in their lives.
The 26 chapters includes interviews with eight successful individuals. A few the people include Jeff Biggs Wobig a US Navy SEAL, Connie Wyatt, (the author's mom), CMO of Best Cellular, Nathan Schulhof the inventor of the MP3, and Caujuan Mayo, owner, author and publisher of UpRock Publications. The remaining chapters cover a range of topics on building the necessary actions to undertake in pursuit of your goal of success. These topics include rewarding yourself, learning how to delay gratification, how to meet new people, how to make others feel appreciated, the art of saying no, and not letting your talent handicap you.
Two of my favorite chapters are Teach People How to Treat You and Don't Let Talent be Your Handicap. In both chapters one can learn a great deal about learning your worth and demanding it as well as building discipline and work ethic that will enhance one's natural abilities.
One of my favorite interviews was with Caujuan Mayo. A former hustler and criminal, Caujuan discovered writing while in prison and has risen to become an author and the creator and owner of a publishing company. It is vital in a book such as this to highlight people who originated from many walks of life. It proves that success isn't how you start. It is how you learn, develop and take action.
If you are not a Christian or spiritual person, you may not enjoy this book, as the author as well as the interviewed are very much into their faith and use Biblical lessons and verses to underscore their views. I am not a religious practitioner, however I found value in all the Bible references and found them very relevant to the lessons offered.
The book is very well thought out and written. I give it 4 out of 4 stars. I truly appreciated reading the wizened viewpoints of people from different backgrounds and with varied experiences. There were many memorable quotes in the book, but one of my favorites was in the interview of Jeff "Biggs" Wobig, who said, "If you want to get something done, say 'I will get that done, and I will not stop until its done.' Just embrace the suck and go for it." Another great quote from the author himself is, "Success is about doing something that improves the lives of others and makes you truly happy."
