We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel which is the first book of the We are Voulhire series. The story takes place in the imaginary empire of Voulhire, ruled by Emperor Wilhelm. The story is mainly told in three points of view by Galen Bray, King Wilhelm, and Lord Eldus. Galen Bray is a twenty-eight-year-old man who lives in the Land of the Princes, which has been drowned in a great war since his childhood. He escapes to a city in Voulhire where he dreams to start a new life with the fortune left for him by his great uncle.

King Wilhelm has been ruling the empire of Voulhire for twenty-five years. He has an enmity with the leader of the order of his knights. He worries about his kingdom and his wayward son. Eldus Alderman is sent to the small town of Hillport as a lord. It was previously destroyed by a powerful mage called Lord Meldorath. Mages are powerful people in Voulhire who exhibit magical powers. Eldus Alderman has great ambitions to develop the town. There is also resistance in the empire named Riva Rohavi.

As mentioned above, this is the first book of the nine-part series and it mainly deals with the introduction of the great empire of Voulhire and the key figures who play a part in its future. This book is a total fantasy entertainer with a new fictional universe, kings, empires, and magic. The descriptions are very realistic and detailed. The author has done a fantastic job of setting the universe of his story concrete. The various points of view in the story help the reader to understand the emotions and thoughts of various characters. It gives the reader a feeling that he is an insider in the story watching various plots unfold.

The thing I liked most about the story is how the author created a whole new world with its cultures, customs, and politics. Since the stories of another eight books are going to take place in the same universe, it is also essential. I love how the author has not made his characters all macho and powerful. I like how the protagonist’s weaknesses and strengths are detailed. I especially like the character of Galen Bray, who is new to the empire and who mainly helps the reader in navigating into the fictional world of Voulhire along with him.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. The book is also finely edited. I couldn’t find any errors except a few missing commas. There is profanity where it is necessary. There are no erotic scenes and it can be read by all age groups. The first book has all the qualities to be the beginning of a great fantasy series. It is also not very long and can be read in a short time. The ending gives way into an interesting second book.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is no fault I can find with the story. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy and action stories. I am looking forward to reading the remaining books in the series.
