Review by mraphael1 -- Shadow Game by A.M. Adair
The novel Shadow Game, written by A.M. Adair is about a spy named Elle, who has been tasked with an operation to take down ISIS by the CIA. Elle works together with an elite team, uses each individual’s skills to successfully complete the mission. This novel focuses on Elle’s journey throughout dangerous operations, moving locations and taking out targets. She builds new relationships and showcases her strengths and weakness. She must work through different situations and personal problems to be successful. Elle is an independent, knowledgeable and strong woman using and building new skills in order to complete the mission.
I am rating this novel 3 out of 4 stars because it was an enjoyable read, the action scenes were very well written and described giving a very vivid image for the reader to picture. The pace of the action scenes was also good, with breaks in between the action for the readers to have a break and be able to go through the full journey. The main character was realistic having both strengths and weaknesses, both being displayed within the novel. The supporting characters were also well written, each having a different personality matching with the tone of the novel and deepening the plot. The dynamics between the characters were realistic and changed throughout the novel, with character having disagreements and fights with each other. The main character was a strong female but still had struggles throughout making the reader have to guess what was to happen next. She must fight through sexism and discrimination to be successful in missions, making her more relatable to readers.
I would take away stars due to the slow start of the novel. The beginning seemed to drag on a bit and a few scenes were heavily described but seemed to have no meaning to the overall plot of the story or to the main character. In a few scenes, there is abbreviations or short forms used that were not explained until later in the novel making it hard to understand at first and having to go back to reread the previous parts.
I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy thrillers and spy genres. This novel takes a realistic approach to action and spy scenes. Also, I would recommend this book for readers who want to try out the spy and action genre as this novel is written so that even if the reader has no prior experience in this genre they can still enjoy the plot and character development. Aditiontionally, the description of action scenes are easy to follow and any specific terminology is fully described and defined in the novel.
Overall this novel was very well written, keeping readers on the edge of their seat, with both action scenes and character development. The description of scenes is very realistic and detailed but does not take away from the plotline. The main character show development showcasing that she is not perfect and is a realistic character. The novel had only a few grammatical errors making it easy and enjoyable to read.
