Declan Noakes is a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War. His only goal is to find true freedom from the demons that hold him hostage. He travels place to place in order to reach his goal, and to fund it, he sells foreign drugs known as Juicy Fruit to various clients he meets on his journey. But things are never easy as undercover cops, detectives, mob bosses, and his family all manage to get involved in his business- and suddenly Declan finds himself in as much danger as a battlefield. The Juicy Fruit Man by LaMar Going tells us the story of Declan’s journey with drugs, enemies, and his struggle for freedom.

The Juicy Fruit Man is the first book of the Declan Noakes Thrillers and was nothing short of fantastic. I loved how immersive this story was- the descriptions were just enough to make me imagine everything that was going on, whether it was Declan on a train or him in a war zone. There was dialogue that made me laugh, scenes that left me on the edge of my seat, and characters that were understandable no matter who you are. While the situations that Declan and his associates go through may not be relatable to all who read, they are realistic enough for the audience to sympathize with them.

The only issue that I had with The Juicy Fruit Man is that some transitions into flashbacks were a bit jarring, but it was never to the point of removing me from the story. This is a very minor complaint, considering that in certain situations the jumpy flashbacks were perfectly fitting for the scene that caused them. Otherwise, this book is well-written and readable. There are no grammatical mistakes and sentence structure is clear, leading me to believe that this book was professionally edited.

It isn’t a heavy read, but heavy profanity, drug use, and mentions of prostitution may not be best suited for sensitive audiences. There is also extreme violence, gore, and everything else associated with military and drug smuggling.

This book was impossible for me to put down with how immersive and well-written it was. I rate it a 4 out of 4 stars. For those interested in military and/or drug-smuggling adventures, this is the book for you. Even if it normally isn’t your cup of tea, thriller fans will still find the story highly enjoyable.
