[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book in a series by the author Matthew Tysz. It serves as an introduction to the science fiction series. It leaves us with many questions and curiosity about what is going to happen next. The novel takes us to another world full of magic and mysteries. The characters are intertwined, yet they all have their own destiny and place in this magnificent world.
Galen Bray, the protagonist, is a young man originally from the Lands of the Princes. He inherits his uncle’s business and house in a small town called Magnum Caelum, in Voulhire. As soon as he arrives, he meets Rowan: his uncle’s executor. They soon become friends, as Rowan helps Galen master the art of blacksmithing. Galen explores the different world and the new opportunities he finds at Voulhire; however, he is still naive and innocent, even though he is a grown man. Is Voulhire going to change Galen?
Voulhire is ruled by King Wilhelm, a king admired by the citizens. He has successfully ruled for twenty-five years; however, he’s been bothered by enemies. A new lord, named Lord Eldus, has been assigned in Hillport: a simple town on the coast. He arranges great things for the small town, serving it as an honorable lord. Nonetheless, there are some deep mysteries around Lord Meldorath: the predecessor of Lord Eldus, and also, the Riva Rohavi’s terrifying nature.
The stories and the characters are very well-developed, presented with a mysterious touch. We are gradually entering the world of Voulhire, where the stories and the characters unfold step-by-step. It is not easy to predict further actions, and I was on the edge of my seat almost through the whole book. I particularly enjoyed the writing style of Matthew Tysz. The language he used in the novel flows delightfully. For instance, the passage: ‘Evening fell and the sky became a deep black over Hillport. A nebulous purple bruise covered the brilliant white gash of the galaxy, which cut across the sky into the oceanic horizon.’ The chapters were alternating between the characters, all written in a third person, except the ones about Galen. These were written from a first-person point of view.
As mentioned above, the thing I genuinely enjoyed the most, was the incredible writing style of the author. The book is clear and easy to read, the phrasing and the descriptions have a pleasant flow. It is exceptionally well-edited, which adds to the enjoyment of reading the novel. I did not encounter a single thing I don’t like about this book. Thus, I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars. There are some minor instances where profanity occurs and there is a detailed violent scene. I fully recommend this book to anyone that enjoys fantasy and science fiction. I believe these series are unique, and fantasy enthusiasts will very much enjoy them.
