[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Matthew Tysz narrates through the point of view of different characters. The most affecting was young Galen Bray. We follow his introduction to Voulhire as he moves to Magnum Caelum to inherit what his uncle left him of his forging business. The wonder we experience through his eyes as he discovers this new world is both refreshing and humbling. As he absorbs and acclimates to his new surroundings, so does the reader.
I loved the slow introduction which lay a great foundation for the subsequent books in the series. The author warns of this fact, which I really appreciated. The first 40 pages or so are slow on the plot uptake due to the myriad explanations that are necessary to put this fantasyland into context for the reader. The author attaches a link to a glossary and a map at the beginning which come in handy with the fictional names.
I loved the subtle lessons incorporated into the story. The notable leadership qualities demonstrated by characters like King Wilhelm and Lord Alderman, are admirable and are bound to leave an impression with the reader long after the book is over.
There is nothing I disliked in the book. The slow introduction would have been it, but the author's warning prepared me for it. I honestly can't wait to dig into the next book in the series. To witness the war of the mages who seek total dominance over the universe and Bary's place in all these.
It is a well-deserved 4 out of 4 stars that I award. Apart from the perfect delivery of the story, the premise of the plot is superb, the characters are substantive in their element and contribute to the whole fantasy, and the humorous narration also was not amiss. The book was professionally edited with zero errors.
I recommend it to fantasy and mystery lovers. This is a great book. The beginning of a whole different world. It is ideal for readers older than eighteen because of the curse words used. Otherwise, it is fantastic for those looking to get lost in a new and exciting world.
