We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment of We are Voulhire series. It follows the events of the first book We are Voulhire: A new arrival under Great Skies. One of the main characters from the first book, Galen Bray, continues his work as a blacksmith in Magnum Caleum. He travels to Virko, the industrial city of Voulhire, in need of iron for his work. His friend Rowan and the monk Demetrius accompany him on the journey.

At Virko, the political dynamics changes as the city changes from sovereign rule to Capitalism. The old and dying lord of the town, Lord Vendus withdraws his claim as the lord. The merchants in the city plan to take the city under their control. The lord’s introverted son, Hans, has some cunning plans for the town. His old friend Kayden is the only one who knows about them and he is worried. In the holy city of Yamon Soul, the religious leader Eiodi discovers a new virus. The escaped mage Lord Meldorath is in the Hillport castle with his followers, planning his next move. Galen and his friends fall into the politics of the Virko because of the old lord’s dying wish. Now, they have to find a way to stop the lord’s son Hans from executing his wicked plans for the city.

I loved the first book of We are Voulhire series and I am happy to say the second book is also up to the standards. The author has continued the story with a gripping plot and detailed descriptions. New characters are introduced in the second book. In addition to the fantasy elements, this book also contains action and paranormal elements. It is fast-paced and thrilling. While the first book is more of an introduction to the fictional empire, the second book has darker themes and goes into the depths of the politics and evils of the empire.

The thing I liked the most is how the author has written the character of Folcro, the new villain introduced in the series. I like how the author has made clear, why he did what he did by giving glimpses of his backstory. I love how he is not just a bad character but a real person who feels empathy just like others but driven by ambition.
Not only Folcro, but all the characters are well-drawn and complex.

There is nothing I particularly disliked about the book. The book is very finely edited. There are very few and minor errors. Colorful language is used when necessary. There are no graphic erotic scenes.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading this book very much. It deserves the four stars. I recommend it to readers who love fantasy and action stories. Since there is some strong language, I recommend it to readers over sixteen.

I agree. Matthew Tysz's books in this series are quite short, but they are concise, fast-paced, and full of twists.

True. Although the book is a detailed fantasy, he manages to not make it cumbersome.

This is a great book of this series. However I had a false start because I began with a second book instead of the first one. Good review.

Folcro's character is so intriguing! His chapters were very fun to read and I hope we get to learn more about him in the next book. Nice review!
