[Following is a volunteer review of "The Hand Bringer" by Christopher J. Penington.]
The hand bringer is a science fiction novel written by Chris J. Pennington . The book has the main protagonist as Peter whose other name 'the hand bringer' seems to give the book its name. He is a police officer in the modern day world. An unfortunate run in with a vampire leaves him hurt and fighting for his life. His friend Luke who accompanies him to a research facility that if I can properly state it fights for the best of human kind, dystopian I know but it actually gets better Peter, Luke and a chosen few have to travel back in time but what happens when a series of unfortunate events brings their departure closer than expected and wholly unprepared?
The concept of time travel is extremely intriguing as it is scary. The thought of travelling to the future or back in time and not change the the present or have a long lasting effect offers a greater charm. Going back one is definitely faced with the challenge of understanding the old language but it does offer great appeal learning it together with the characters. The author largely brings this setting to life coupled with a healthy dosage of humor from the characters.
I loved the way in which each character was brought to life throughout the book but I became greatly fascinated with Boriana at first one does not know which side she'll be in and the suspense carries on through the book there is never a dull moment with her and her constant wit towards Peter proves endearing. The other characters like Luke who is mostly the voice of reason to Peter and his loyal best friend and Boravic though not from the same time he and the main protagonist build a great relationship. He is a formidable warrior but his beliefs that garlic and divine power ward off vampires connects readers to the original vampire book.
With its complex ideas, the hand bringer takes a little while to warm up to but once done, it becomes hard to put the book down. The author has brought forth a world far from the original story but like a flower that slowly blooms all the book's layers are revealed as it progresses. The difference in nature of the characters enables them to fit together perfectly.
This was my first time reading a science fiction and I was quite apprehensive at first I enjoyed and loved the book immensely. In mind with the beauty and emotions evoked I givethisbook Regular text. 4 out of 4 stars . I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal fiction and wants to take it to another level.
