A world with mystical powers only in the hands of some of its people, a newcomer who considers Voulhire to be the rescue from all the suffering he has endured, and an imprisoned dark wizard who is waiting for the right moment to reemerge and assert his power on this world. Does any of this ring a bell? Yes!!! Any true Harry Potter fan would not help but notice the striking resemblance between this first book in a nine-book fantasy fiction series and the Harry Potter series.

When Galen Bray is liberated from the Land of the Princes, he arrives at Magnum Caelum in Voulhire, where he finds a note from his late uncle. “Keep your head low, but your eyes ahead. Keep your mind on earth, but your heart among the stars.” With these words, Galen has set his heart on honoring his uncle’s legacy as well as repaying this land for the hospitality it showed him.

Meanwhile, the people of Voulhire are recovering from the unfortunate events brought upon by its previous lords. Will the king’s plan to bring his country back to prosperity succeed? Will the new Lord Eldus be able to replace the painful memories of Hillport with new bright ones? What really happened to the dark Lord Meldorath? Well, You are going to have to find out yourself.

If this book was made into a movie, it would definitely be R-rated. Not only does it contain violence and bloodshed, but it also includes excessive use of profane language. What disturbed me most, though, was the somewhat womanizing phrases. Nonetheless, they were only said by characters who were established as impertinent. Last but not least, like any magical fantasy, this book may not appeal to people of certain beliefs.

Be that as it may, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a gripping story that hints to even more thrilling events in the following books. Not to mention the meticulous editing, with the exception of a few minor punctuation mistakes and a maximum of two typing mistakes. Additionally, the characters were very well developed and easy to relate to. Having a profound appreciation for his new home, land, and friends, Galen Bray is, in my opinion, the most lovable character. My grin was always from ear to ear when I pictured him innocently admiring the world around him; the sky, the ocean, and the room full of laughter. What really grabbed my attention was the advanced level vocabulary used just in the right places; you will probably need to look into your dictionary for a word or two.

Given these points, I give this book 4 out of 4. This is due to the great start of an apparently entertaining story, which despite its comparability to the Harry Potter books, is kept original. When you finish this book, you will be instantly compelled to start the next one. I found the events thrilling and enjoyable, that’s why I would recommend it to fans of thrill, magic, and mystery. Then again, I would not recommend it to people who are irritated by violent scenes and vulgar language.
