Review by Ldpuff -- Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign
George R. R. Martin once said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” No truer words could be spoken about Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign. I felt as though I was living the lives of Adam and Carly in this fascinating fantasy tale. The story began by taking the reader into the depths of Adam’s seemingly very dark mind while introducing the world through his eyes. This teenage loner could never quite figure out why he felt so out of place. As the story continues, he meets Carly, an optimistic girl with secrets of her own that hold unknown truths for Adam as well. The couple embarks on a dangerously exhilarating journey of ancestral mystic powers and killer scientists. The book ends with just enough foreshadowing to captivate and hook the reader into absolutely needing to read the following book in the series.
I give Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to any of my fellow fantasy book lovers, but also to anyone wanting to give the genre a try. This book had just enough of a foothold in the ‘real’ world to connect with the life of the reader, but enough fantastical elements to provide an escape that we fantasy readers adore so much. I found no grammatical or spelling errors in this book, nor did I find any typos. Opaque was exceptionally well written and edited.
My favorite part of this book was the superb character development. Calix Leigh-Reign had me fooled, thinking Adam truly was a terrible person in the first few chapters. As the story unfolded and truths were revealed, I was relieved! His character growth was almost beautiful, in a way. I can imagine many readers finding a real connection with him and his outsider ways.
What I liked least about this book was the pace at which it took to get past the introductory portions. The introductions to the characters and setting were necessary, yet at times boring. I could feel the anticipation of a good book, but it took a while to get there. I would have preferred a touch of the exciting portions of the book to come through sooner as to better hook the reader. I kept reading because I knew it was coming, but an inexperienced reader could have been easily unimpressed.
Upon completing Opaque, my mind has a million different ideas of what could be in store next for the group of powerful misfits I came to love in this book. I am excited to read book two and have unresolved questions answered! As a final note to anyone reading this review, read this book!

Honestly, I did not like him at the beginning of the book! It was strange to read a book in which I did not like the main character for a rather large portion of the book. By the end, I understood him so much more.
