[Following is a volunteer review of "Dagger's Destiny" by Linnea Tanner.]
I give Dagger’s Destiny by Linnea Tanner a 4 out of 4. It’s pretty fast-paced, taking off at a run from the very first page. There seems to be a mystery around every corner, every new character that enters has their own secrets. It’s also very well edited. I don’t really think there was anything to dislike about this book. Anyone that likes magic, prophecy, and mysteries to be unraveled would enjoy it. I would say that it’s definitely for a mature audience though.
It opens with the king finding out his daughter betrayed him by falling in love with the Roman enemy. Her weakness almost costs him his life, and it causes a curse that could still lead to his doom. Now he must decide if he should spare her or have her beheaded for treason. After that tough decision is made he has to wait and see if it was the right call or the wrong one. If it was the wrong one he'll have to pay with his life, and possibly the lives of several others.
The descriptions in this book are awesome. You can really feel what each character is going through as they’re going through it. You feel Marcellus’s sadness at being separated from Catrin, you feel her sorrow from hurting her father, and you feel the anger of Marrok because nothing ever seems to go his way. You also can feel all the excitement, adrenaline, and sorrow during the fighting scenes. There’s a pretty grotesque scene that involves a wagonload of bodies, it's so well described you could almost retch along with the characters. If you have a weak stomach be careful reading that in chapter 25.
There are a lot of different characters in this book but each one is unique. Most of the time the bad guys are just bad guys and you wait for them to be conquered. However in this book after following along in their shoes you can’t help feeling a little sorry for them too. It’s not easy to pick a favorite or to pick a right or wrong side. It has warriors, sorcerers, shapeshifters, kings and queens, and wolves. It’s also filled with murder plots, war plans, secret love affairs, betrayals, and lots of plot twists. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone, and lots of people losing their heads. It was definitely an interesting read.
