[Following is a volunteer review of "The Juicy Fruit Man" by LaMar Going.]
The Juicy Fruit Man is the tale of Declan Noakes, a man who fought in Vietnam. Though now back home, Declan finds it hard to live normally, as he can't get his ugly experiences of the war in Vietnam out of his head. He has nightmares, is excessively paranoid and soon to pacify the demons in his head he delves into the use narcotics. He picks a liking to "juicy fruit" popularly known as marijuana and before long, Declan along with his cousin starts dealing the narcotic. What starts first as a hobby for the two soon expands as they become major drug dealers making a fortune from the marijuana business and become known in the drug-dealing world. Things start to look up for Declan, but his new fortune soon brings him unwanted attention and on the radar of the authorities and as he finds himself and his business under various threats, he finds out that the only man he has always needed is himself.
Written by LaMar Going, It is a novel of ranging emotions capturing every spectrum especially those of pain and betrayal. It is the story of a broken man's climb to fulfillment through any means necessary and his shadows and demons ready to push him back down.
This without mincing words is a very exceptional novel. From the very first page, the enthralling narrative kept me hooked till I read the very last sentence and it left me with a hollow nostalgic feeling on parting with the book.
The writing style was superb, expertly and instantly making the protagonist relatable to the reader. The conversation was also well thought-out and didn't seem forced or fake in any way. The plot was compelling and interesting and combined with its pace and awesome storytelling, was a huge page-turner for me.
Also, the author nailed down every single detail of every single thing; scenes, descriptions, atmosphere, etc. Literally everything was described with the author's use of very catchy and poetic phrases and sentences which all in all, lent a perfect imagery to the novel.
The Juicy Fruit Man is of the thriller genre, but I would recommend it to anyone who would love a good read. It's too good to miss out on. The novel is darkly themed, and some scenes of violence are well detailed so I would suggest it for adult readers.
I proudly rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. I found totally nothing wrong with the book and its text was also well edited. I would really love to see more novels by the author as I was greatly impressed with this novel and hope it perhaps gets adapted into a movie some day.
