We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is an introduction to the realm of Voulhire, it's history and current events. Voulhire consists of hard working humans and mages who are able to wield magic. Voulhire is currently in a secret war between a powerful mage, Meldorath, and the humans who believe Meldorath is dead. While the humans are trying to move on and build up their community Meldorath is growing strong, learning magic in a way that no mage has done before, and plotting his revenge against the King who had him imprisoned.

The story of Galen is also introduced in this first novel. Galen was born and raised in the Land of Princes, a far away land from Voulhire. When his great-uncle becomes ill he sends for Galen to come to Voulhire and take over his business as a blacksmith. Galen doesn't arrive before his uncle passes away, but is left with a manual to teach him the ways of forging. Galen makes a couple friends in his new home land that decide to help him learn the business and build it up to be greater than before.

What I liked most was how Matthew Tysz connected all of the characters together. The book is written from the point of view of many characters, some more important than others. You are introduced to not only a few main characters who tell their story throughout the whole book, but also characters that, although have smaller roles, give valuable insight to the realm as a whole. By the end of the story you have a complete view of the inner workings of Voulhire, it's politics and caste system. The glossary at the end of the book was also very helpful in sorting through any terminology that may have been confusing or missed while reading the story. There was not any part of the book that I disliked most and I am excited to continue reading this series.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies was very well written and it was apparent that it was superbly edited. It captured my attention throughout the entire story and left me wanting more at the end. I am very interested to read the rest of the series to find out what happens next.

Based on this first novel I think this series is well suited for readers ages 14 years and above. While there aren't any explicitly graphic scenes, there is mature content discussed that occurred before this storyline began as well as moderate profanity and violence that is portrayed in battle scenes. I would definitely recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies to anyone who likes to be transported to a magical and mysterious world.
