Life has a funny way of dealing with things when you thought you had it all figured out - either things go out of control or it’s the other way around.

An Imperfect Crime by Fred G. Baker starts with a scheme from three friends namely: Peter Simpson, Alaster Brown, and his girlfriend Sarah Parker. Drowning themselves in alcohol and self-pity one night, as to how unfair life is, and how difficult it is to be a writer and have their books published by big companies; the three decided to put on a show by staging the perfect crime – Peter’s novel. They believed that this grand dramatic scheme will make them famous and will catapult their careers, so they set their plan in motion.

A year later, Peter found himself inside a jail cell awaiting his execution. However, until his very last breath, Peter held on to his novel and claimed he’s innocent from a crime that didn’t really happen. He was still waiting for his friends to save him from his judgement. His last favor to his confessor, Father Montero, is to find out what happened to Alaster and Sarah, and why things didn’t proceed as planned.

Dejected by the death of an innocent man, he started to secretly work on the closed case and got help from a crime officer named, Lori Sanchez, who believed that the crime scene was too good to be true. Together they followed trails from the United States to Mexico and unravelled other unsolved cases of disappearance, drug trade, gun and women trafficking over the years. Whether they solve the mystery of the perfect crime or not, that’s something we get to find out from the book itself.

Our author, Fred G. Baker, is an exceptionally talented writer who has the ability to persuade readers into diving along with his characters. I commend him for writing such a brilliant story filled with suspense, action and so much discovery in between. He was able to weave together the missing pieces of the puzzle despite the intricate world he has created.

This is one of the few gripping detective stories I have read which really got me hooked. The book gave me a How To Get Away With Murder vibes. It started out like any other story and suddenly it exploded into a complex plot with revelations of mystery after mystery after mystery. It is an action-packed and adventure-filled thriller story. Reading it made me feel like I was the one uncovering the secrets. I have nothing bad to say about the plot, it was really an incredible one. I liked the idea of having an empowered woman as a protagonist. The writer portrayed her as someone who doesn’t need saving but is still soft in the inside. The author’s portrayal of Father Montero is also realistic and one that made the book more interesting. The downside of the story for me, was the fact that I was able to guess who the killer is right from the moment the unsolved cases were all revealed at the early stage of the book. Perhaps that was actually what the writer was trying to do. Although, I still got the satisfaction that I want as they went through all the details in solving the different cases.

I gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There were no errors encountered during the reading. This is well-written, organized and easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an interesting read in one seating. I can say that you wouldn’t be able to put this down once you started it. Lovers of detective and thriller stories will have an amazing time digging through the secrets. I don’t recommend this to young readers since the theme is about violence, killings, drugs, abuse and guns. Great caution is much needed. Also, readers will need to pay attention to the timeline since it plays a very important role in solving the mysteries. So for those who are not fond of going through timelines and heavy themes, this isn’t the book for you. Overall, this book is incredibly amazing. I can’t wait for the next one.
