Written by Charlie Sheldon, Strong Heart is an adventure fiction that connects the present world to the world thousands of years ago. The book talks about 13 years old Sarah and her little group consisting of grandfather Tom, Tom’s friend William and William’s daughter Myra. Centered on Sarah, the story starts on a stormy night when Tom, William and Myra are packing for a hiking trip to the Olympic National Park in Washington. Seeing Tom’s ex-wife on the front door leaves Tom stunned as he finds out about his granddaughter, that he never knew existed. Deciding to take Sarah along, the group takes off for their hiking trip, which results in a story of an ancient atlatl by Tom, appearance of a short face bear meant to be extinct 12 thousand years ago, following the disappearance of Sarah for 8 days. The thrill begins here as Sarah appears out of nowhere and takes her group to a trip down the memory lane.

Strong Heart is a treat for history fiction lovers, as it talks about history and mystery both. The origin of a Native American tribe, an organization trying to mine on a plausible archaeology site with the tribe objecting, is the common theme that the story revolves around. During all of this, beautiful descriptions help the reader to live the story. The book has a dash of magic, mixed with thrill, along with fantasy, all thrown into history. This amazing mixture captivates the reader to keep exploring the land of magic that Strong Heart is.

Talking about the pros, the book has extremely beautiful details. The author is kind enough to provide a map that helps the reader to navigate through Sarah’s additional journey. A lot of research seems to be done by the author as, although being fiction, the details have a precision to it. This would be one of the first books that made me google about things mentioned in it. The book is written in a simpler manner that co-ordinates with the intricate details.

Cons of this book includes little errors here and there like forgetting to put spaces between words, just some typing mishaps. Although the map is very helpful, going back and forth during reading becomes a hassle. There are some confusing parts in the book as it gets hard to tell which character is speaking or whose point of view is being shown. The book has very little swearing so it is safe for all ages.

Considering the above points, I rate this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars for the amazing journey it took me on. This was one of the best books I’ve read and I look forward to reading the next in the series. Quoting the author, “May each of you find your own short face bear.” May every reader get the pleasure to experience the magic called Strong Heart.
