We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz, is the second book in a nine-book fantasy series. Following on directly from where the previous book ended, the story focuses on how Galen Bray is adjusting to his new life, while introducing us to one of Voulhire's industrious towns Virko. Virko is a fairly new town compared to others in Voulhire and was built up from the ground by Lord Venden Hrelek, who has taken ill. This however is not the only tragedy to befall Virko or Voulhire as truths about the people in Voulhire start being revealed.

The book is very well written and it grabs the reader’s attention from the start. The richness of the detail provided by the author allows the reader to feel like they are present in each scene. The author continues to make use of the different narrative styles as in the first book with Galen’s scenes being told through a first-person narrative and an omniscient narration for the rest. The book is easy to read and despite everything that happens in the book, the reader is never lost. It is easy to get swept up in the story and the reader is left with a sense of reading just one more page to see what happens next.

The author’s skill at creating well-rounded characters remains on display with new and returning characters displaying diverse personalities and coming across as realistically-written. Each is brought to life in a way that the reader cannot help but feel something for each of them. I enjoy the pace of the book as it does not drag on or allow for any boring moments, whether it be love or hate. The book is much more action-packed than the first, without the same long build-up to the excitement.

There were no elements of the book that I can say I did not enjoy, however for more sensitive readers, it should be noted that the book does get darker and bloodier than the first.

The book is very well edited and there were barely any mistakes. The previous book contained elements of science, the spiritual world and the magic world and the second now adds alchemy and demonic powers to the mix. Unlike the first book, this story has homosexuality and some references to sexual abuse.

Based on the above I give the book 4 out of 4 stars. It grabs the reader and I personally cannot wait to see what the next book has in store. If you are a lover of fantasy novels and times where kings and lords existed, then this is a book for you. I do however recommend that you read the first book as it sets the scene for this book.
