Review by azidy -- We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End
The future of Voulhire is hanging by a thread. Cities have fallen to demons, traitors and rebels. The picture of perfection has never been more misleading as Voulhire approaches the first days of utter chaos. When the most powerful mage leads the church of Destinism, and the most dangerous organisation prepares for war, what happens to the kingdom?
The king is unaware of the enemies’ advance, as he is trying to decide whether Voulhire will open its doors to strangers who want to escape the endless war. What will the Emperor of Lullabies do if his people find refuge someplace else? Those who can perceive him as more than an old story know that Voulhire does not stand a chance against him and his powers. Who will try to stop the possibility of an attack, and who will take advantage and become the most powerful man in the kingdom?
We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End is by far the most exciting book in the series. Matthew Tysz did an excellent job of building the plot and connecting it with little hints from the previous books. It is obvious he carefully planned out every detail, as the characters and the setting stayed consistent throughout the series. The plot is easy to follow, but complex enough to keep the reader interested. After not writing about certain characters for a longer time, Tysz makes sure to include a short description to remind the reader about who they are and why they matter.
One of the best parts about the series is the main character’s growth and progression. Galen, who started as a refugee and experienced Voulhire alongside the reader, becomes an active citizen whose actions make a difference. He has already established a close friendship with two other characters in the previous books, but in We are Voulhire: Someone Else's End, their relationship becomes even more important. It took a while for Tysz to reveal information about Galen’s past, but the readers who connected with the innocent protagonist get to see his other side as well.
Just like the rest of the series, this book also features important social issues and political topics. These include the question of accepting refugees, voting and democracy, patriotism, the importance of religion, sexuality, and the abilities of one person to impact society. The writer managed to create a fantasy world with magic that is also relatable and realistic. The only flaw from the first two books was the lack of female characters, but the third book featured a couple of them that had important roles and will probably be featured in the next book as well.
I have found only one minor mistake and can conclude the book was professionally edited. It was my favourite book of the series, and I loved the dynamic chapters and how the characters’ personalities showed through their actions. Because of these reasons, I will gladly rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels with a more serious plot and characters. The entire series contains a decent amount of violence and gore, which makes it unsuitable for younger readers. There is no sexual content, but there is some occasional swearing. I would strongly advise reading the series from the start to fully understand the characters and the plot, as the books are short and often end at the most interesting part.
