Written by one of the characters in the book, Jess Lederman, Hearts Set Free is a book that offers hope and is powerful enough to inspire positive change within the reader. I was drawn by the title of the book which filled me with a longing to read it and as soon as I started reading it; I realized that my anticipations were not in vain.

The book is written in two-time frames, one based in the early 1900's and the other in the early 2000's. The former of the two-time frames is written in a narrative style with a character named Uukkarnit 'Luke' Noongwook as the narrator, the latter is written in a third person narrative style. It is divided into four parts with which different characters are introduced coupled with their struggles. In the first part and first chapter of the book we are introduced to a teenager, Luke Noongwook and his mother Yura Noongwook who had been left feeling desolate by Victor Noongwook, Luke's father and Yura's husband.

The author then introduces David Gold, a boxer who seeks to find his sole purpose in life and his mentor, boxing heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In the current era, Joan and Tim who are producers for a science series are introduced. With their series, they set out on a journey to find the truth about a certain event in Astrophysics that could rewrite science history. All these characters experiencing varying obstacles in life get to discover God and strengthen their faith in Him through life's deplorable circumstances. We are taken through a journey filled with both devious and divine events and the various characters that seem to have lost all hope find their way to God.

I love the circumstances with which each character is introduced. The manner in which each character's predicament unfolds up to a state when, with faith and finding God, each character finds purpose, understanding and meaning in life is remarkable. There are certain instances of profanity in the novel. I came across the word '*****' quite a number of times while reading the novel and I believe this may be quite sensitive to some readers. The editing of the book is exceptional with no grammatical errors; hence I am giving it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The most important reason that drove me to give it this rating is the hope and change that filled my spirit as soon as I finished reading it.

I definitely recommend this book to everyone from all walks of life. Although the book may be centralised around Christianity; I believe it contains some intense life experiences and lessons that one can apply in life. Irrespective of whichever belief system you follow, this book is a great read to consider. The book also tackles some great debatable concepts like the contradiction between science and religion coupled with the special inclusion of Belgian Priest and Physicist Georges Lemaitre and Albert Einstein just to name a few. If you want to go on a spiritual adventure filled with life's hurdles that turn into the most astonishing discoveries of history, science and faith then this book is definitely for you.
