We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Mathew Tysz is the second installment of the series We Are Voulhire. In this book, the focus is on the city of Virko, the most progressive city in Voulhire and home to secrets almost as dark as the soot-covered roads.

Galen Bray, one of our protagonists, feels he owes the city of Magnum Caelum a debt for taking him in and will do whatever he can to show his appreciation; so when the mayor comes to him with a request, that he helps get iron for the city from Virko, Galen, along with his friends, immediately take on the request.

Getting there, Galen finds himself agreeing to a favor for the dying Lord Venden, the man who created the city of Virko. Lord Venden wants his house cleansed, he believes there’s a demon bound to it and his recluse son has been contaminated with its darkness.

We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is written in both third and first-person narrative. Although it starts off quite slow in the beginning, it eventually picks up the pace and soon we’re kept on our toes, wondering what on Earth the young Hans, the only child of Lord Vanden, is up to. The book is sprinkled with bits of science, magic, religion, politic, and humor. We’re exposed to the thoughts of men and how far they would go just to remain in power.

The overall story plot was enjoyable, and Mathew did an outstanding job bringing his characters and scenes to life. I liked how we were given little crumbs of information as the story unfolded, not too much, but just enough to keep us interested and pining for more. That said, the book shows zero grammatical errors, meaning this book was exceptionally edited.

However, I did not like how there weren’t enough paragraph breaks whenever a different person spoke; it made it hard to follow along. The book also laid it heavy on the derogatory homosexual comments, and the undercurrent of derogatory remarks on women, perhaps it was made that way to build up more on the fact that the story was set in medieval times, but it still displeased me. Other than these complaints, I found the book remarkable and so will give it a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.

That said, I do not recommend this book to anyone below the legal age, as this book contains quite gory descriptions of violence with allusions and mentions of rape. Despite this, I recommend this book to fantasy lovers and to anyone who enjoys a good story.

I've read the first book of this series and I enjoyed it in a way. I look forward to reading this one, I'm done for the humour. But I'm not sure I like degrogatory remarks on homosexuality and women, but we'll see. Thanks for the review!
