Review by Cazrichmond -- The Dark Web Murders
A vengeful psychopath, with a God complex, begins a murderous rampage to execute revenge and justice. The mysterious maniac, otherwise known as Nemein, posts blogs on the dark web. The blogs describe justifications for the murders and include all the grisly details. Can Detective Chief Inspector, Jim Sheehan, unravel these monstrous killings and find the calculating killer? The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries, written by Brian O’ Hare. Despite some references to incidents in previous books, this book can be read as a stand-alone novel.
A series of gruesome murders take place, the first one being of an infamous and callous Judge. This is no ordinary crime, and it is executed by an attacker who leaves no evidence and is meticulous in planning and preparation. The killer has a signature style and leaves the investigative team flabbergasted by his motives. Much work is required to uncover any connections and clues to lead them to this depraved individual.
With blackmail, animosity and an elite club discovered within this investigation, Jim Sheehan has an intertwining series of events to connect. This includes unnerving blogs on the dark web, with many followers. The killer displays an intelligence and embraces the growing popularity of the blogs. Becoming more confident and with an inflated ego, the popularity helps the killer justify violent actions.
With a sinister club being discovered, the police team finds many avenues to explore. The club appeals to the wealthy and elite, with perverse tastes and desires. Many fantasies can be catered for in the club, including extreme sadism, pornography and torture. Does this discovery lead to the killer, or serve as a distraction?
This crime-thriller has it all, mystery, suspense, surprises and gore. It is captivating and intriguing from the first page and immerses you in the unravelling of a complex murder mystery. There is a high number of prominent characters, and the author includes a handy list of principal characters to refer to at the start of the book. The book is set in Northern Ireland and there is a glossary of Northern Irish police terms and acronyms, which is very useful. I enjoyed the descriptions of the area, including buildings, scenery and some history of Northern Ireland and references to some struggles there.
Many dark issues are in the book, causing a lot of the themes suitable solely for adults. It is interesting learning more about the dark web and underground groups of people who indulge in unimaginable things. Albeit a fictional novel, it touches on issues relevant in the world today, which are horrifying and hard to read. These elements may be too much for a more sensitive reader.
The book incorporates all the great ingredients to a detective story. As a reader, you are interested in the case, with suspense and curiosity mounting as you become more involved in the story. The police task-force is skilled, each individual has distinct personalities, strengths and weaknesses. It provides great attention to detail as they investigate the murders, and it gives an insight into the intricacies of this job. Some more personal relationships included, are a pleasant addition, making the characters very relatable and showing a softer, more human side of their characters.
I liked everything about this book. It’s a story that is speedily devoured, as it is remarkably hard to put down. The suspense in the book is to be complimented, with the author building up a thrilling and complex plot-line. The characters are great too, with the addition of humour between certain ones. Some competition is apparent between characters, which is relatable in this profession, where ambition is a driving force for success.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is only suitable for adults as it contains profanity and sexual themes. Included are horrific crimes and violent scenes, so it may not appeal to everybody. I didn’t find any grammar or spelling mistakes, so I believe the book has been edited. I was disappointed to finish this book, as I enjoyed it so much. It’s fast-paced and action-packed and deserves full marks.
