[Following is a volunteer review of "Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat" by R.F. Kristi.]
Inca and her animal friends, Cara, Fromage, Terrance, and Charlotte, have been whisked away to vacation in Sri Lanka, where warm sands and cool breezes await them. While on the island, they meet Rani the turtle and Meena the elephant. They haven’t been on the island long before they hear about a valuable sword that was stolen from a museum. Will these snoopy animals stick their noses where they don’t belong?
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat is the 7th of 9 books in the Inca Book Series, written by R.F. Kristi. It can be read separately or with the rest of the series. Kristi has written an entertaining book that kids will love reading. I found this book to well-edited, just as the others in the series are.
Overall, this book was similar to the 8th book that I have read, but I did see one main difference. Unlike the 8th in the series, this book was published so that it was actual text, instead of being one big picture. I found this setup much more appealing, and it made my experience reading the book much more enjoyable.
My favorite part of this book was one specific scene when Inca said, “Suddenly, I realized that I could never have found the goodies if it were not for Terrance, Rani the turtle, and Meena the baby elephant. Cara, Fromage, and Charlotte had all helped, too. It had been a joint effort.” I found this quote to sum up the theme of friendship and teamwork that is weaved throughout the book nicely. The characters depend on each other, and I thought it was a terrific moral for kids who read this book.
I have almost nothing to complain about in this book. The only thing that irked me was, once again, the illustrations. In my opinion, they are cheap-looking and unprofessional. However, this 7th book had a better format than the 8th that helped improve my reading experience.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The plot was funny and almost believable, the ending was satisfactory, and I enjoyed the new characters. It is a perfect book for elementary kids transitioning between picture and chapter books. It also has lots of useful vocabulary that will help kids understand other books in the future. The mystery aspect of this book will draw readers in, and the characters and suspense will make sure that they cannot put it down!
