Troy J. Davenport is thrown into a quest for answers to the mysteries surrounding his late mother, Senator Beth Davenport, after he stumbles upon a key, leading him to the senator’s suitcase safely stashed away for years. The contents of this mysterious suitcase set him on a voyage of discovery. As Troy unravels piece after piece of the senator’s shadowy past, it leaves him with even more questions about the woman he called his mother but whom he barely knew. What secrets have the saintly senator painstakingly hidden these many years? Will Troy ultimately find the answers he desperately seeks?

In the first part, the author elicits the reader’s curiosity as he tells the story from Troy’s perspective using the first-person narrative and leaving a host of unanswered questions. In the second part, using the third-person narrative, the author reveals Beth’s final moments, where she relives unspoken details of her past and captures her unsuccessful attempt to make things right with Troy. In the concluding part, Troy pieces together the puzzles of his mother’s life and finds answers to his many questions. The Senator’s Suitcase by Mitch Engel contains themes of lies, intrigues, tragedy, friendship, legacy, and above all, a trinity of love.

The author carefully builds up this story from a seemingly mundane start to an array of themes and unexpected twists and turns that fascinated me. He skillfully takes the reader through a rollercoaster of experiences with the use of flashbacks. Noteworthy is the author’s ability to create relatable characters and capture their peculiarities and proclivities. I found the charming Carl Stratton and the cantankerous senior Joseph E. Davenport particularly interesting.

Mitch Engel took me along on the challenging journey through Beth’s life. I speculated about the secrets and shadows of her past, I experienced the suspense of unresolved questions and was repeatedly caught off-guard by the unexpected revelations. This book gave me an insight into the life, struggles, woes, and wins of the LGBTQ community, precisely when the world was less receptive to their peculiarities. I was quite disappointed that Troy remained oblivious to one secret. However, it reflects the realities of life; some secrets are better undisclosed, and fate does not always provide answers to all our questions. I must commend the author for capturing this truth.

In conclusion, I would recommend this book to open-minded readers due to the LGBTQ and other unconventional realities it captures. I consider The Senator’s Suitcase an entertaining, engaging, and enlightening book, masterfully written with good diction and advanced grammatical expressions. Asides from a few grammatical errors, there is nothing I dislike about this book. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

Thanks for your great review. This book seems to address many interesting aspects of life. I wonder what could be the secrets that Beth so desperately hid? Was she a lesbian and Troy is not her child or something like that?

Indeed, it does have a rich array of themes. No :D She actually birthed Troy, but you'll have to read the book to find out what Beth's secret was. This is how I speculated too :lol2: And the revelations were nothing I had guessed.

I think what I find most interesting about this book, besides the intriguing storyline, is the multiple narrative perspective. Such multi-perspective book answer almost any question the reader might have, and leave little room for loopholes. I also like the themes covered in this story. I would like to read this book.

I wonder if the suitcase is an allusion to the LGBTQ theme. Among the many mysteries in the story, why was that particular secret undisclosed? Will it be different if it was another secret? What an intriguing story! Nice review. Thanks for the insights.
