[Following is a volunteer review of "The Decision" by Michael D. Komeshak.]
The Decision by Michael D. Koneshak is your typical what if aliens came to Earth story, but with a non-typical twist. What if the aliens came, not to invade, but to assist in the betterment of the human race? What if they wanted human input on how to go about said betterment and would only do what the humans decided?
The book follows Jason Harper, a wildlife conservation officer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, as he goes from mere bystander of the aliens' arrival to key player overnight. For unknown reasons, the aliens have chosen him, along with a few others from around the globe, to decide the fate of the world.
After the initial set up of the characters and setting and the like, the plot becomes very dialogue heavy. Instead of dragging on, Koneshak is able to keep the pace going and engaging. I enjoyed that about the book. I also enjoyed that the book made me think. While some things happened that I have already thought about in my life, there were others that had me looking at things in a new light. The book was edited well, with no obvious errors, and there was nothing I majorly disliked about it.
I would rate The Decision a solid 4 out of 4. While I did not agree with all of the ideas presented, I feel that this was a good assessment of what the climate of the world looked like when it was written. Overall, the book presented an interesting concept that Koneshak pulled off very well in my opinion.
Anybody who enjoys the science-fiction genre, particularly the stores with aliens and about first encounters, would enjoy this book. Those who enjoy reading books that make you see the world in different ways would also enjoy this book. For those readers, I highly recommend The Decision by Michael D. Komeshak.
