When one of the cities of the Kingdom undergoes too drastic changes in leadership, King Wilhelm decides to send one of his more promising candidates to take over the direction. However, the city continues to be in turmoil after deposing their previous leader, Lord Meldorath, known for his violent use of magic.

Along with this main plot thread, the reader follows the story of a poor young man, Galen, who is given his inheritance from his uncle. After living in a kingdom full of war and turmoil, he doesn't know what to make of Voulhire. He resigned himself to learning the trades of being a blacksmith to take over for his uncle. Little does he know that this Promised Land he has found himself in has its turmoils under the surface.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz hits many things that I love about fantasy books. I love fantasies that have lots of layers to how their cultures work. There's always that top layer that everyone in the kingdom is aware of, and then there are the deeper layers where there are secrets, and people are manipulating each other. I liked that there was a mystery element to this story regarding Lord Meldorath and what he did during his previous leadership, besides the fast-paced action scenes and the more traditional hero's journey that we get with Galen.

I think this is one of those instances where I am far more interested in the mystery surrounding this book’s villainous characters than the heroes. I don't know if this is necessarily bad because I tend to be biassed towards villain characters in general. Still, I think it loses some of the tension when all I want to learn about is who the bad guys are instead of who the book’s main characters are. While I did enjoy Galenès character, I didnèt feel particularly drawn into his story arc.

I rate this book 3 out of 4.

I would recommend this book to people over 18 years old as there are some graphic descriptions of violence. If violence makes you uncomfortable, then I would not recommend reading this book. It is a book geared to
