Review by tancrowe8182 -- The Second Cup
The Second Cup By: Sarah Marie Graye I’m rating this book a two out of four, I believe some readers would enjoy this book but the constant changing of characters gets excessive and confusing. This book was labeled as a romance, I would not agree this should be under fiction. There are relationships but the book does not come off as a romance.
This story is about four very different friends Beth, Olivia, Abbie and Faye, you walk through their trials and tribulations with life, love, mental health, relationships and death. Beth is dealing with mental illness that was never diagnosed and the courage it takes to face life. Then you have Olivia who is stuck in a relationship that no longer fulfils her trying to do the right thing and not step on anyone’s toes, she has to find her inner strength to do what is best for her. With Abbie you have your typical young adult who enjoys going out to drink, making out with random guys doing things she would later regret. To add to the fire Abbie is also on her second marriage with a guy she has no connection to she has to overcome childhood issues to heal before she can feel she deserves a better relationship. Let’s not forget about Faye the selfish friend, Faye has been obsessed with a relationship from her time at University. When Faye starts digging she would have never imagined what she would find, the people from her past start to collide with her group of friends taking Faye on a new path.
My personal opinion on this book is it wasn’t for me, I did not enjoy reading it I found the constant switch of characters excessive sometimes it was only a page and then you were off to the next person. I feel like there were more filler pages then actual story lines. What I did like about the book was the diversity in the characters most people will be able to connect with someone in the book, either a main character or one of the supporting roles.
My favorite quote of the book is “it wasn’t the fear of death that consumed me, but the fear of the pain I’d be left in if I survived”. The author’s note to reviewers explains she herself has suffered from mental illness and for me it enabled me to understand some of the characters better having dealt with my own mental illness. I will say because I connected with the mental health issues in the book I might not have understood the other characters because to me they weren’t relatable.
The beginning of the book the author explains that the book has been professionally edited and compared to some books I’ve read it was almost perfect, I found 3 errors that caught my attention. The book is written in UK English so you come across a few words that make you take pause to figure out what is being said, for example tyre should be tire and mould should be mold.
I would suggest this book to be 18+ any younger and most would not be able to relate, mostly this is a young adult book 18-25. This book does contain the occasional profanity. Would I suggest this book probably not but that’s not to say others would not enjoy it, I believe this rating from others could be higher than my two out of four.
