The Secret to Living a Fantastic Life
by Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tink
You are not just reading a self-help book when you pick up The Secret to Living a Fantastic Life. You are reading a labor of love. Dr. Lycka and his good friend, Harriet Tink, have lovingly compiled a list of 13 mindsets they have named “Golden Pearls” described as “metaphors for transcendence into a full and rewarding life.” (Lyka, 23). Dr. Lycka became a mentor and friend to Tink when she needed guidance and courage. Tink had experienced a trauma that was transformative. Dr. Lycka had experienced a health crisis that made him reevaluate his daily outlook on life. Through their friendship they gained a greater sense of love, empowerment, thankfulness and forgiveness.
Dr. Lyka has recorded, organized, and written the book, but would not have a book to write at all without the good friendship of Harriet Tink, and it was organized well. This book is written in an easy conversational style which is what I liked most about it. Each one of the 13 Golden Pearls is explained through a casual conversation between two friends.
Before each discussion, there is a feature story and moral that exemplifies the mindset to be discussed. Quotes from various sources including Dr. Lycka and Tinks’ own words are included. These quotes aid in the description and explanation of each Golden Pearl however, there were too many included throughout. The quotes overall became the aspect of the book that I ended up disliking the most. Despite this, my favorite quote came at the beginning of the book and I feel set the tone very well. The quote was said by Epictetus about 2,000 years ago; “It is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens.”(Lyka, 9).
It is apparent throughout the book that both Dr. Lycka and Tink have put so much of themselves into selecting each Golden Pearl. The end of the book mentions that there are more Golden Pearls to be shared and that readers can participate in the selection and discussion for a follow-up book. Dr. Lycka and Harriet Tink want to continue their intentional living and share their Golden Pearls with as many as possible.
This book is best suited for older teens and adults. The trauma that Tink endured is told in a graphic manner that may be upsetting to some readers. I enjoyed reading it from beginning to end. However, this book can be started at any chapter or Golden Pearl. It provides easy to implement advice for everyday living. I rate this book as 3 out of 4 stars. The multitude of quotes made the reading a bit choppy, and not flow seamlessly. It did help that the editing was completed professionally, and I did not stumble over typos or grammar errors. I would ultimately recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a go-to self-help book to change their mindset and focus on ways to move forward in life.
