Review by Brigitte Gallegos -- From Drift to SHIFT
From Drift to SHIFT is an inspiring book written by Jody B. Miller. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars as it’s a very enjoyable read that leaves the reader with a lot to think about when examining one’s own path in life. The book is a collection of true stories of people who encountered hardship which led them to make drastic changes to their lives. Some experienced accidents or tragic health problems, while others were unable to find happiness in their professional lives and noticed that something needed to change.
All stories are written very heartfelt and are truly inspiring. Ultimately, everyone wants to find happiness in life. The book illustrates how a variety of life events can lead to the necessity of making a shift. Some of the people in the stories were forced to make a shift and reorient themselves, for example after an accident that changed their physical capabilities drastically. Others felt the necessity of a shift slowly creeping up and encountered different signs along the way that kept them on track and offered assurance that they would eventually find their new path.
Besides the stories, the book contains 4 sections in which Miller explains why we should shift in life, when to shift, how to shift, and what happens after the shift. These sections help the reader to reflect on the meaning of the stories and offer a lot of guiding questions and thoughts.
What I liked the most about the book is that it included real-life stories from truly inspiring people. Each story is different and they represent people from very different walks of life. Some of the stories might seem a bit extreme, but they also show that one doesn’t need to wait until something extreme happens in life before noticing that a change is due to find true happiness. What I was missing while reading the book were some concrete tips and recommendations that would be easily applicable. For example, how to get started to make a shift or which type of signs to look out for, etc. It would have been helpful to receive some sort of step by step instructions or a cheat sheet on how to get started.
Overall, From Drift to SHIFT is an enjoyable and short read. I think anyone who is looking to make a change in their life would enjoy this book. No matter if they already have an idea on what to change or are just starting to feel that inkling that a change would lead them to more happiness.
