Review by thend157 -- We are Voulhire: The Flesh of the ...
We are Voulhire: The Flesh of the Mind is the sixth book of the We Are Voulhire Series by Mathew Tysz. In it, Demetrius and Rowan find themselves in Diamara trying to solve a mystery involving possession. Meanwhile, Galen is stuck in Caromentis trying to convince Melodreth to abandon his ambitions of power and return to Voulhire. Will Galen be able to save Voulhire, or will the country lose itself to the ambitions of the Emperor of Lullabies?
Something that I really liked about this book was the new character of Angela. She seems full of spunk and energy and is clearly very devoted to her husband and her people. I enjoyed how she seemed to rally the people of Cridaea together and how she uses this to foil the plans of the ambassadors to get the people of Cridaea to submit to the invasion of the Emperor of Lullabies. I was also thrilled with the developing friendship between Harper and Rhea because this seemed to soften Harper’s character. I found myself also enjoying the horrific character, Bad Noise, and the demonic possession parts. I loved reading the descriptions of these creatures and their actions. I also really liked the sense of surrealness in the author’s description of Caromentis. This reminded me of what it would be like to be stuck in the subconscious. It seemed to suit Caromentis to be described as a very fantastic place where strange things happen and bizarre conversations take place.
I did not like jumping around from character to character. This was because it prevented me from connecting with the characters. I also hated how there seemed to be multiple plots running at the same time. It was confusing and made the plot seemed very disjointed and broken up. I also did not relish reading about Maido’s creepy and perverted thoughts, particularly when he was thinking about Rowan being chained up. This is because it seemed so sadistic of him to want to do this to another human being.
I would give this book a rating of three out of four stars. This is because, while I love the characters and description, I found the lack of cohesiveness of the plot too distracting. I would definitely not recommend this book to younger children because of its use of sexual sadism in the plot. I would recommend this book to readers of science fiction and fantasy because of its interesting discussions about science, religion, and magic.
