[Following is a volunteer review of "Soul Seeker" by Kaylin McFarren.]
Paranormal novels have always proven to be my cup of tea due to the sense of thrill, and on the edge of your seat feel that it gives off. I considered Soul Seeker a must read for me because, in addition to being a fantasy book, it incorporated other genres such as romance, which I also find enjoyable.
This fantasy book kicks off with a man named Poe whose marriage was on the rocks and relationship with his son in dire straits. Regardless of this, he was determined to protect his family from the clutches of an evil demon that lurked about them. In the process of trying to save his son, he loses both his son and his life due to the cunning nature of the demon, Crighton.
After spending his life as a lackey for Lucifer, the ruler of Hell, Crighton was taken captive during one of his missions of acquiring souls for Lucifer. While held captive, he bonds with an angel, an act that was simply unheard of. After he escapes, he begins the journey of unraveling the mystery surrounding his birth, alongside the herculean task of the redemption of his soul in order to become worthy of the love of an angel.
I found the beginning of this novel exciting. It started off edgy, and interesting enough to keep you hooked. The characters had depth and there was the obvious display of their development. The dialogue between them was memorable, especially during the parts when the writer decided to forsake English for Latin. With the language well known for its fine speeches and beautiful poetry, it helped in making the story more compelling and though the use of the language was few and in-between, it was one of my favorite parts.
The author, Kaylin McFarren was able to keep me hooked from the start but along the line, the book began to lose its credence. Admittedly, the storyline is quite unrealistic, but it contained all the necessary elements to ignore its fallacy during the beginning. After a while, the story began to feel washed-out and lacking in sincerity. I discovered some loopholes in the story and I felt that the character, Crighton, and other demons in the book exhibited traits that weren’t necessarily associated with their demonic personality as perpetuated in the book.
If you possess high moral standards, then this book might not be the one for you, due to its use of raunchy scenes that contained explicit language. There was also a considerable use of profane words that were offensive in nature due to the personality of the characters. I found this book professionally edited and I noticed only a single mistake that wasn’t grammar related while reading it.
I’ll rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I do so because, from a general point of view, the plot line was captivating enough to keep me going till the end despite the intricacies of the book falling short in some areas. If you’re into paranormal urban romance novels, then this is definitely the one for you.
