Waterworks by Jack Winnick is an action and spy story about a husband-and-wife team working to stop a terrorist attack. Lara and Uri work for Israel and the USA to investigate a terrorist attack on the water system of a major US city. The storyline is easy to follow and the book is well written.

Uri and Lara are experienced Mossad agents, married to each other, and on a well-earned holiday break in Los Angeles when the FBI reaches out for their help in responding to a terrorist threat from Iran. Law enforcement officers in Los Angeles thwarted an attempt to poison the water supply with polonium. This is a deadly radioactive substance that causes internal organ damage followed by a slow, painful death. Panic was avoided, and there were few casualties. However, the FBI and Homeland Security expect a follow-up attack soon to come out of Iran. They don't know when or where. Having an urgent need for intelligence, the US agencies ask these agents to interrupt their vacation and get involved in finding the source of the expected attack. Uri and Lara have experience with helping the USA and running missions in Iran and are known by both countries' intelligence communities.

Uri and Lara are quickly set up on parallel missions in Tehran. With appropriate disguises to hide recognizable physical features, they pose as information technology experts seeking highly skilled jobs in sensitive positions within the Iranian government. Supported by American intelligence, they are able to display impressive skills and to achieve notable results for their new employers. They are each promoted to positions of increased responsibility with increased access to sensitive information. This leads to contacts with people who are in the process of planning the next attack on US soil.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it is an enjoyable read and the story maintains a fast pace. It might be a 4 star if the plot were more complex and imaginative. The book keeps the reader's interest but doesn't necessarily leave one looking for more. I most liked the suspense of the story, trying to figure out how the terrorist attack would be uncovered and stopped. I least liked the overly simplified plot. It could have been more interesting, and less straight forward. The unique twist of Uri and Lara's marriage didn't add much to the plot. The author could expand on these two characters to provide more depth and interesting information for the reader.

This is an appropriate book for people who like spy thrillers. It might offend those who don't support Israel's position in the world, as well as those who are more sympathetic towards Iran. There was no profanity, nor sexually explicit language. The book is well edited, with only a few minor grammatical errors.
