Review by njybarbo -- Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga book 1)
Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first book in a science fiction/fantasy series about five unlikely companions who are trying to save the universe. Rynah’s home planet has been destroyed when a crystal has been stolen by Klanor, a man she thought she could trust. As she escapes the destruction aboard her grandfather's ship she learns it has what we could call artificial intelligence. The ship is named Solaris and she has quite a bit of attitude and sass.
Rynah learns from Solaris that in order to stop Klanor from stealing all of the crystals in the universe she must unite with four others who possess unique abilities and characteristics. These four individuals end up being transported from different time periods from planet earth. While shocked, afraid, and confused, they all ultimately decide to help Rynah and they begin their quest to find the remaining crystals.
What I liked most about this book was the fantasy/science fiction elements. I also thought it had an intriguing story-line that kept me coming back to read more. I liked that the ship became another character and there was some possible foreshadowing about her future which makes me excited to read the other books in the series to see how she evolves. This book reminded me of RPGs I’ve played like D&D & Traveller. This would actually be a fun story to play in a game.
What I disliked most about this book was some of the character interactions and development. I felt like one character in particular was excessively harsh towards another and it wasn’t necessary to propel the story forwards. I felt like some of the characters were better developed while some were kind of forgotten until they were needed in the plot. It would have been nice to have more character development as the story progressed from all of the characters, not just a few of them.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars . I didn’t give it four stars because some of the characters were underdeveloped. I think it deserves more than two stars because it was fun and interesting to read and had a great story-line that intrigued me. This book is for people who enjoy a quick read and it is for those who enjoy books that take place in outer space. This would be appropriate for young adults as well as adults.
