In High Flying by Kaylin McFarren, the story begins in the year 2013 with the main character Skyler, a very troubled teenager, as she locks herself in a bathroom and attempts to relieve her anxiety in the only way that she knows how, through self-mutilation, after finding out that a classmate has died. Skyler has no parents and lives with her overbearing grandfather.

Skyler is considered odd by many people, including her grandfather and classmates at school. She has no support system, other than her friend Roxy, who has only recently come back into her life. Skyler is an avid aviation enthusiast and receives two tickets to a nearby airshow. She gives one ticket to Roxy and offers to meet her there.

Both Skyler and Roxy hope to become pilots one day, and both love aviation. However, Roxy never arrives and it is only later that Skyler finds out that Roxy was in a terrible accident. Skyler isn’t able to handle her anxiety and runs away from home.

Jump forward to the year 2018 and Skyler has in fact become a stunt pilot flying at airshows. She is very, very good. After conducting a series of rolls and loops with her teammate, for an attentive and appreciative crowd, Skyler is caught in an unexpected storm.

The results that follow are also very unexpected. Skyler is transported back in time, where she has an opportunity to change her circumstances and make a better life for both herself and others.

The story is mainly told from the main character, Skyler's, point-of-view. Each chapter starts out with a short quote that seems to bear witness to what might be forthcoming next. There was one very intriguing poem at the start of the book, which could have had many meanings.

Initially, I thought this was going to be a book about overcoming anxiety and depression. Imagine my surprise when the story took a turn and it became full of action and adventure. The writer pulls the reader into the story and keeps them in suspense. I was amazed at how quickly I went through the entire book.

I would definitely recommend this book to readers looking for something a little different. This is the first book by Kaylin McFarren that I have ever read, but it won't be the last.

This story is recommended for any reader interested in mystery or science fiction. There is a small amount of profanity and violence spread throughout the book, so some parental guidance may be appropriate for younger readers.

What I liked most was the realistic characters and situations created by the author. They were at all times believable and the reader will most likely find themselves pondering on their own situations, and people that they have known, while considering whether similar events are taking place in their own lives. There was nothing that I disliked about this book.

This book was professionally edited and I only found two minor spelling errors. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, based on the creativity of the writer, and how the story developed and the facts remained consistent throughout. I am really impressed with this writer and look forward to reading more of her work.
