[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
In a land where war and poverty were constant, there lived a young man named Galen Bray, who only knew loneliness and survival. When he had the chance to get out of the Land of Princes, he held it with both hands and he never looked back. He voyaged for a week in order to get to the town of Magnum Caelum, in the land of Voulhire as he was summoned to be the heir of his so-called uncle. As he settled in his new environment, he noticed a lot of differences between Voulhire and Princes.
Meanwhile, Lord Eldus Alderman was appointed by King Wilhelm Arcolo to be the new Lord of Hillport. His two predecessors were believed to be feared by their people because of their histories and powers. Lord Orlin was executed because he was known for being a pedophile. On the other hand, Lord Meldorath was feared for his power and magic. He was believed to be dead, but occurrences kept hinting that he is not. However, despite the history of Hillport, Lord Eldus made it his mission to turn the town into an economical power. This caught the attention of a group of rebels named Riva Rohavi, whose ambition was to destroy the land of Voulhire.
Because of the royalty system used in the book, I believed the setting of this book is during ancient times, but the context was very much modern, in my opinion. There were some similarities to our reality, which made the book somewhat understandable and relatable for the readers.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies was written from multiple points of view but for some reason, I liked the book that way. I think it's giving the readers an opportunity to understand the gist of the characters' perspectives. I particularly loved the action part of the book. I think it was descriptively written, which is good news for readers who love action. I also loved its abrupt ending because it makes you want to know what's going to happen next. The book came with a reference guide, which is a plus because it can be quite confusing sometimes.
I have to commend Matthew Tysz for writing a book that wraps around the existence of magic. This book captivated my mind into thinking that magic can actually co-exist with the physical world.
The beginning was quite boring, but as you go on, the scenes get interesting and it turned quite an adventure. I never expected that this book would glue me into place, but it did and I am not complaining. Overall, this book is a good introductory to the series. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . I think this book will be appreciated by avid Sci-fi/Fantasy readers. However, I would not recommend this book to young readers because it contains inappropriate language.
