The MISOGI Method , by Jody B. Miller is a guide and a workbook about facing personal challenges. Misogi is an ancient Japanese ritual meant to purify the soul and the mind. It involves standing under an extremely cold waterfall and repeating a traditional chant. A modern Misogi is an act or ritual that scares you, pushes you outside your comfort zone and gives you a sense of empowerment. It will help you realize the unlimited possibilities in your life: it can shift what you believe about yourself and help you understand that you can achieve more than you imagined.

The author shares her own Misogi experiences while guiding you through the history of a Misogi and explaining how to create your own. Each chapter is centered on a part of the preparation for your Misogi. At the end of every chapter there are blank pages to fill with personal reflections, and takeaways which summarize the main concepts. The author encourages you to write down, to help you focus and understand experiences and values, with the support of useful exercises to become more self-aware and more open to new experiences.

In fact, to figure out and practice a Misogi you need to know your strength and your weaknesses, accept them and be ready to embrace a big shift in your life. The author offers some tools to break through the obstacles of fear, uneasiness and a lack of belief in your ability. You might have already experienced Misogi: they are the impossible challenges or goals you have achieved. Most of the times they come with difficult situations you had to face, often out of pain.

The main elements of the personal improvement process are those you can find in most self-help books: discover your past, understand who you are, journaling, unplug, practice visualization, think big, open yourself to change, live in the moment, find your tribe, plan your change in details. I like the idea of growing by setting high standards and trying to make the impossible possible, yet I am aware small daily changes are easier to face and accomplish.

The final part of the book consists of the Misogi Method podcast transcripts, and of a transcript of Jody’s TEDx talk about Misogi. They are interviews of successful people who give examples of their Misogi. Links and other resources are at the end of the book. I recommend this book because it is easy to read and suitable for all persons, since it is a step-to-step guide to overcome our fears and realize that we can make big changes in our life. It contains a lot of practical ideas on how to improve our life. Yet I found the detailed interview of the podcast too detailed and related to specific personal experiences. For this reason, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
