[Following is a volunteer review of "Soul Seeker" by Kaylin McFarren.]
Benjamin Poe is a small-town firefighter captain of the Lochton fire brigade. When a mysterious fire breaks out at a university, his son attends, life will never be the same again. Old secrets and a demonic presence make for a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Creighton is going about collecting souls for the ruler of hell; until he is forcibly bound to an angel, he is sworn to tear apart. Now, how will he face Lucifer in the pits of hell, and why is this beautiful angel so infuriating? Find out all this and more as the mysteries unfold in Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren.
Creighton has many problems, including a fondness for a beautiful angel. His life takes a horrible turn when he is stuck with a naive angel too young to fear him and old enough to stand up to him. Will the mystery of his birth be his freedom or undoing? When the lines of good and evil are distorted, what will he do to survive? Tainted angels and demons with heart make for an epic journey through hell and back.
I thought that the overall story was excellent, and I liked it. My favourite parts were the tidbits of humour that were sprinkled throughout the book. The story was fun and engaging from the beginning till the end. All the characters were genuinely portrayed, and they had flaws and heart in just the right amounts. This made them more realistic, and they were capable of good and evil. Because even the angels had a dark side and the demons had a good side. Anyone who likes dark fantasy and romance should like this book by McFarren.
I do think that the story has been placed in the wrong genre. Soul Seeker is supposed to be a murder mystery, and yet most of the book is high dark fantasy. The first hundred pages and above have a murder mystery theme, and the rest of the book is dark fantasy. Since the book is over four hundred pages long, this came as a surprise. I wish that the story were more interlinked, into a complete story, rather than the first portion about one set of people and the second about a completely different set of characters. For people who do not like too much fantasy and violence, then this is not a read for you.
I do think this story is for a mature reading audience because of the instances of torture, violence and intercourse. Although none of these three themes was described in incredible detail, they were too much for under-aged children.
I rate this book at 4 out of 4 stars for an exciting read. I cannot give a bad rating because I was never bored and the text was well edited. There were only a few minor errors.
